Essure in Israel: preliminary results

Ariel Revel

Hadassah University hospital, Jerusalem, Israel

Introduction: Essure is a novel method of sterilization performed by hysteroscopy. Although this procedure is available in most of Europe, USA,Canada and Australia, this procedure was not available in Israel.

Method: Patients were invited to consider Essure as their permanent contraception. The device was installed in the clinic without anasthesia. Patients filled a questionnaire and were discharged immediately following the procedure.

Results: 12 patients participated in the pilot group at Hadassah. The average age was 40 (34–45) and the average number of children was 5 (4–8). The average time for the procedure was under 8 minutes. Satisfaction rate was 100% and all patients tolerated the procedure well. In one patient, periostial adhesions required adhesiolysis, prior to Essure insertion. All patients resumed their normal activity on the same day.

Discussion: Essure is now available in Israel and hysteroscopic surgeons can learn to introduce it on ambulatory basis. The procedure was well tolerated by patients. The limitation is probably going to be the price of Essure, as this procedure is not covered by the ‘health basket’ in Israel.
